Coronavirus PPE Waste Disposal

Collection & disposal of bagged PPE used to protect against COVID-19

Book a Coronavirus PPE Waste Collection

Do you need to dispose of personal protective equipment used in the workplace that may be infected with Coronavirus? The use of personal protective equipment will be increasing as we all begin to return to work. To create a safe working environment disposal of potentially contaminated PPE waste should be done safely to reduce risk in the workplace. For example, PPE that should be disposed of in the workplace includes disposable overalls/gowns, gloves and masks.

We have a simple solution for dealing with your PPE to help make your feel safe at work. First, put your PPE in a plastic bin bag and tie it shut. Next, put that bag into a second bin bag and tie that securely. Then, store the double-bagged waste in a safe bin for at least 72 hours to minimise the risk of infection remaining on or in the bag. We can provide a separate wheelie bin to store your PPE waste if required. After the 72 hours, we will collect the waste and dispose of it safely and securely.

Recent Updates to PPE and Coronavirus Waste Guideline

The Government has recently updated guidelines for dealing with Coronavirus PPE waste (13 July 2020). The new guidelines that were published suggest that PPE waste does not need to be double-bagged unless you are self-isolating at home and have the virus. For more information on GOV.uk see the updated COVID-19 waste guidelines here.

New guidelines include:

  • dispose of them in your 'black bag' waste bin at home or at work, or a litter bin if you're outside
  • do not put them in a recycling bin as they cannot be recycled through conventional recycling facilities
  • take them home with you if there is no litter bin - do not drop them as litter

New guidelines for business waste include:

  • provide extra bins for your staff and customers to throw away their waste face coverings and PPE used for social distancing, and any other additional waste, such as takeaway packaging and disposable tableware
  • make sure that staff and customers do not put face coverings and PPE in a recycling bin as they cannot be recycled through conventional recycling facilities
  • make sure bins are emptied often so they do not overflow and create litter

We are committed to making workplaces feel safe. We can provide extra bins for customers to separate the PPE waste. Contact us on 01706823001 for more information about our PPE waste services.

Information About Coronavirus

Coronavirus (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by a newly discovered coronavirus. The most common symptoms of Coronavirus (Covid-19) are a high temperature, a new, continuous cough and a loss/change to your sense of smell or taste. More details about COVID-19 can be found on the NHS website and the World Health Organisation. Materials and PPE contaminated with the virus are classified as hazardous waste. Research has suggested that the virus cannot survive longer than 72 hours on surfaces. As a result, "double bagging" the waste and leaving it safely for at least 72 hours makes it safe to be disposed of as regular general waste. We can provide hassle-free solutions and help you manage your coronavirus waste safely.

Is waste infected with Covid-19 hazardous?

If you are unable to store the COVID-19 waste for at least 72 hours, PPE and contaminated waste will be classified as Category B infectious waste. This means it cannot be collected as general waste by our standard waste collection service. Instead, the waste must be placed in clinical waste bags/containers and picked up by a clinical waste specialist. As a specialist waste, costs for this could be significantly higher than if it is general waste. Our solution of double bagging and waiting 72 hours before collecting the waste will substantially reduce your waste disposal cost for any potentially contaminated PPE waste.
