What Are the Weight Limits for Skips?

Before hiring a skip, knowing what weight limits apply to each skip size is important. Knowing the weight limits helps make sure you hire the correct skip for the job.

Skip weight limits are determined by two main factors: the skip's size and the legal weight limits for transporting the skip on public roads.

Skip Weight Limits

  • Standard Skips: Skips come in various sizes, each with a different maximum weight capacity. For example, a standard 8-yard skip can typically hold around 8 tonnes of material. However, this capacity can vary depending on the type of waste. Heavy materials like bricks, soil, and concrete can quickly reach the weight limit even if the skip isn't completely filled.
  • Heavier Loads: If disposing of heavy materials, you might have to hire a smaller skip, such as a 4-yard skip or a 6-yard skip, to avoid exceeding legal weight on the roads. Some companies also offer specific skips designed for heavy waste.
Skip Size (Cubic Yards) Maximum Weight Limit (Tonnes)
4-yard 4 tonnes
6-yard 6 tonnes
8-yard 8 tonnes
10-yard 8 tonnes
12-yard 8 tonnes
14-yard 8 tonnes
16-yard 8 tonnes

Transporting Skip Weight Limits

  • Legal Weight Limit for Transport: Our vehicles transporting the skips have a maximum gross weight limit, usually 18 tonnes for standard skip trucks. This limit includes the truck's weight, the skip, and the waste inside it. If the skip is too heavy, we won't be able to transport it legally, meaning you'll have to remove some of the waste before we can take it away.
  • Maximum Size for Hardcore, Bricks & Soil: If you're having some construction, demolition or gardening work done at your house and you're filling the skip with hardcore, bricks and soil, the largest size you can hire is a 6-yard skip. This makes sure that you stay within the legal limits.

Our expert team is always here to help you pick the best skip for your needs, the type of waste you're disposing of, and the appropriate skip size to avoid exceeding weight limits.

Make sure that you don't overfill your skip, as it can affect the safe transport of the skip and may lead to fines or delays in collection.

We always make sure you have the right skip for the waste you're disposing of. Get in touch for a skip hire quote on 01706 823001.
